We are a Training Practice

Belmont Surgery

Belmont surgery is a training practice. This means that we normally have a registrar doctor working with us. The Registrar is a fully qualified doctor who will have spent a number of years working in hospitals. In order to become a fully qualified general practitioner, registrars need to spend a year working in a training practice. Throughout their year of training they receive support and training form the members of the practice in preparation for a future career in general practice.

What does this for our patients?
Being a training practice has a direct impact on our patients and how we operate. From time to time, you may be offered an appointment with our registrar doctor. We would encourage you to see the registrar. They will have spent several years working in a hospital environment, and should have no difficulty in dealing with your problem. By having a registrar train with us, we often find that they bring with them a fresh approach to medicine since they are often very up-to-date with current treatments.

You may discover that the registrar may wish to videotape their surgery consultation with you. Videotaping is used for teaching, training or exam purposes only and you would always be asked to give your consent beforehand after the consultation.

You may also discover that on occasion, our registrar is accompanied by a doctor from the practice during your appointment. This provides the registrar with the opportunity of having direct input from their training through 'live mentoring'. Again, you would always be asked beforehand if this was OK with you.

What does this mean to the practice?
It means that two of our doctors in the practice have undergone training to be a trainer. Furthermore, on occasion the practice is assessed by a visiting team to ensure that we have suitable premises and equipment for a registrar, and that our library is up-to-date. As such, we have to ensure that we are fully up-to-date and that we function well as a practice.  Belmont Surgery is able to function as a training practice because of the full support given by all the partners and the dedicated team of staff employed. Finally, being a training practice provides us with the opportunity of being better doctors due to rigorous assessments and in turn, benefits our patients ensuring that they receive the best that primary health care can provide.
